“YOU DIDN’T HAVE TO DRIVE ME, Sirus,” Mary said, filling the silence left when Heidi had drifted off to sleep in the back seat of Sirus’s truck.

“You seemed upset when they called. I didn’t want to hear you’d driven off into some gully because you couldn’t keep your mind on the road.”

Mary was impatient, on edge. After the way she’d admitted her fears to him earlier in the week, Mary was sure she was the last person Sirus would want to be with. He’d been having an early dinner meeting in the Pony when Heidi called with the news that Lexie was being admitted to the hospital. He’d noticed that the call had shaken her and had offered to come with her to the hospital.

He’d been a rock for her to lean on all night, and she appreciated it. At the same time, her feelings for Sirus made her uncomfortable. He was a wonderful man, so thoughtful and kind. If only he didn’t have such a dangerous job.

Sirus slowed for a bend in the road, and Mary bit her bottom lip to keep herself from saying anything else that would only come out looking foolish or ungrateful.

“Any news about the fire?” Mary asked after a few more miles spent wondering how long it would take for her to shake her infatuation with Sirus.

Sirus chuckled. “It seems to be fighting back. Just when we think it’s coming under control, the winds help it jump a line or airborne sparks land in a tree down some impossibly steep slope and it regains momentum.”

She could tell by his tone that Sirus was comfortable with the fire, as if he were confident they’d win and was amused by its behavior. It was so like a Hot Shot, former or not, to have a cavalier attitude about facing death.

She would not start another discussion about the danger of fire fighting. “Do you know how much longer base camp will be running?”

“Can’t really say. It all depends on the fire.”

“I hope for your sake it closes soon, although business has been so good, what with the crews passing through town, that I’ll be sorry to see them go.”

“But things will settle down to normal.”

“I used to think Lexie and Jackson together was normal. And then it wasn’t. Little Heidi was a ray of sunshine until she started maturing this past year.” Mary flexed her fingers. “And after years of working at the Pony, the joints in my fingers are starting to ache. I don’t think I know what normal is anymore.” She turned her head to look at Sirus, surprised to find him half smiling.

“I do appreciate your perspective on life, Mary.”

Mary accepted the compliment, comforted by this moment of peace. She felt closer to Sirus than ever before, but knew somehow that the feeling wouldn’t last.

“Have you…Have you noticed a change in Jackson since he’s come back?” he asked, changing the subject.

Mary shifted in her seat. “What kind of change?”

Sirus didn’t answer, just continued to drive.
